vLite - Windows Vista configuration tool

vLite is a tool for customizing the Windows Vista installation before actually installing it.

Main features are:
  • hotfix, language pack and driver integration
  • component removal
  • unattended setup
  • tweaks
  • split/merge Vista installation CDs
  • create ISO and burn bootable CD/DVD
Windows Vista from Microsoft takes a lot of resources, we all know that. vLite provides you with an easy removal of the unwanted components in order to make Vista run faster and to your liking.

This tool doesn't use any kind of hacking, all files and registry entries are protected as they would be if you install the unedited version only with the changes you select.

It configures the installation directly before the installation, meaning you'll have to remake the ISO and reinstall it. This method is much cleaner, not to mention easier and more logical than doing it after installation on every reinstall.

The Unburdened Mind

“I don’t think I feel things the same way you do.”

The man sits at the table in the well-fitted attire of success—charming, witty, and instantly likeable. He is a confident, animated speaker, but he seems to be struggling with this particular point.

“It’s like… at my first job,” he continues, “I was stealing maybe a thousand bucks a month from that place. And this kid, he was new, he got wise. And he was going to turn me in, but before he got the chance I went to the manager and pinned the whole thing on him.” Now he is grinning widely. “Kid lost his job, the cops got involved, I don’t know what happened to him. And I guess something like that is supposed to make me feel bad, right? It’s supposed to hurt, right? But instead, it’s like there’s nothing.” He smiles apologetically and shakes his head. “Nothing.”

His name is Frank, and he is a psychopath.

EU Official: IP Is PersonalEU Official: IP Is Personal

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- IP addresses, string of numbers that identify computers on the Internet, should generally be regarded as personal information, the head of the European Union's group of data privacy regulators said Monday.

Germany's data protection commissioner, Peter Scharr, leads the EU group preparing a report on how well the privacy policies of Internet search engines operated by Google Inc., Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. and others comply with EU privacy law.

He told a European Parliament hearing on online data protection that when someone is identified by an IP, or Internet protocol, address "then it has to be regarded as personal data."

Excavating Beekman

Construction is occurring all over New York City, and in Manhattan it is common to see both new projects and utility workers upgrading the urban infrastructure. In one recent case, what started out as a routine project by the city's Department of Design and Construction (DDC) in Lower Manhattan soon became anything but. The Wall Street Water Mains Project, a long-term utility upgrade project, yielded several important discoveries in the South Street Seaport historic district, making it clear that archaeology remains widespread beneath the city's streets.

2,500-year-old sword excavated from tomb

Nanchang -- Chinese archaeologists have discovered an elaborately-made sword, which they believe is 2,500 to 2,600 years old, in an ancient tomb in the eastern province of Jiangxi.

"It is reckoned as the oldest ever excavated in the country," said Xu Changqing, chief of the excavation team.

The well-preserved sword, some 50 centimeters long, is black, gold and bright red. "A dragon pattern was carved on both ends of the scabbard, and the middle part of the scabbard was decorated with two rows of a W-shaped design," said Xu.

Xu and his colleagues have dubbed it the "First Sword under Heaven" in keeping with other two heritage pieces called "First Mat under Heaven" and "First Fan under Heaven", both of which were unearthed from the same tomb.

Since the start of excavation work last January, at least 1,000 relics have been found in the ancient tomb, which was built in the late Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). The findings include 47 coffins. The archaeologists are studying the valuable artifacts in hopes of discovering who was buried there and what the relics reveal about the funerary culture of the period.

Risala

Being Ibn Fadlan's Account of the Rus

Ibn Fadlan was an Arab chronicler. In 921 C.E., the Caliph of Baghdad sent Ibn Fadlan with an embassy to the King of the Bulgars of the Middle Volga. Ibn Fadlan wrote an account of his journeys with the embassy, called a Risala. This Risala is of great value as a history, although it is clear in some places that inaccuracies and Ibn Fadlan's own prejudices have slanted the account to some extent.

During the course of his journey, Ibn Fadlan met a people called the Rus, a group of Swedish origin, acting as traders in the Bulgar capital. The first allusion to the Rus comes toward the close of the description of the Bulgars. When the Rus or people of another race came with slaves for sale, the king of the Bulgars had a right to choose one slave in each ten for himself. The full description begins:

Higher wine prices boost drinking pleasure: study

STANFORD, California (Reuters) - The more wine costs, the more people enjoy it, regardless of how it tastes, a study by California researchers has found.

Researchers at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the California Institute of Technology found that because people expect wines that cost more to be of higher quality, they trick themselves into believing the wines provide a more pleasurable experience than less expensive ones.

PETA Killed 97 Percent of 'Companion Animals' in 2006

"Death toll up to 17,400; overdue report describes PETA's deadliest year ever

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- An official report from People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), submitted nine months after a Virginia government agency's deadline, shows that the animal rights group put to death more than 97 percent of the dogs, cats, and other pets it took in for adoption in 2006. During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 pets. The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) is calling on PETA to either end its hypocritical angel-of-death program, or stop its senseless condemnation of Americans who believe it's perfectly ethical to use animals for food, clothing, and critical medical research."

I personally despise these tosspots. Not for their beliefs or what they espouse but for their sheer dishonesty and all-round slimy behaviour.

Nazi code rocks Netherlands

Nazi code rocks Netherlands

Dutch journalist offers € 25.000 reward

Barely six months after German violist Stefan Krah famously cracked a Nazi code that had eluded even the best cryptographers, a new challenge now holds the Netherlands in its grip. This time it is a coded document allegedly drafted by Hitler’s secretary Martin Bormann.

While in April 1945 the Russians fought their way ferociously through Berlin, the Nazi’s hastily transported a stash of gold and Hitler’s personal diamonds to a secret location. The cargo was meant to finance the operations of the guerrilla movement Werwolf. During the final hours of the battle Hitler’s secretary, Martin Bormann, handed a coded document to an army chaplain and ordered him to take it to party-treasurer Schwarz in Munich. The document apparently revealed the location of the gold and diamonds. However, Schwarz had already been arrested by the allied forces and Bormann did not survive the Russian assault.

Authentic document
Over sixty years later the document coincidentally landed in the hands of Dutch investigative journalist Karl Hammer. It had been laying around unnoticed among the legacy of the chaplain. Hammer is convinced that it is authentic. “I fully understand that some people have doubts, but my research shows that the paper, the typography and the imprint of the letters are simply credible. Also the runic symbols that are used correspond with the style which Bormann would have used.” To Hammer the only question that remained was how to decipher the code and if the stash could still be traced.

Nazi treasures
According to Hammer the present-day value of the gold and diamonds is anyone’s guess. He is convinced, however, that it must be huge. “Hitler had in his possession the most beautiful and finest diamonds. According my information these were known to his intimates as ‘the tears of the wolf’ and by themselves would be worth a fortune.” That the stash could still be laying around somewhere is very probable, according to historian Gerard Aalders of the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation, who was approached by Hammer for his expert opinion. Together they concluded that even in modern times there are still Nazi treasures found, like the large stockpile of art works that was concealed by the Nazi’s and tracked down in Switzerland in 2006.

Reward
During a full year Hammer dug into the coded document and although he managed to decipher most of it, he failed to trace the hiding place of the gold and diamonds. Searching throughout Germany he became convinced that he was overlooking something. Due to contractual obligations for a new book project which starts next February, Hammer has run out of time to continue his search. He now offers a € 25.000 reward to anyone who can solve the last part of the puzzle. To help researchers on their way Hammer has found Dutch publishing house Elmar willing to publish his dossier in a book. Hammer: “Just like Stefan Krah and his network of amateur researchers managed to crack the earlier Enigma code, I now hope that the same can be done with this one.”

Publicity
Hammer’s challenge has caused wide media interest in the Netherlands, both with broadcasters, print media and internet newsgroups. Private broadcaster RTL brought the item exclusively in their evening news show, while the next day newspaper DAG spent almost an entire page on the story. The challenge since then has gotten the Dutch in its grip and Hammer’s book, titled “De tranen van de wolf” (the tears of the wolf), is quickly on its way of becoming the bestseller of 2008, according to Marco Wieser, manager of the Read Shop a chain of bookstores. “We expect sales to rocket and are stocking our 150 stores nationwide to accommodate consumer demand.” In the RTL news show historian Barnouw criticized the book as “fantasy” but was rebuked already the next day since he had not read Hammer’s dossier before commenting on it.

Conditions
There are several conditions to the payment of the reward.

  • Payment is only due when the gold and diamonds are actually and tangibly presented. Karl Hammer is at no time and in no way obliged to act or travel to visually inspect the gold or the diamonds.
  • The genuineness of the gold and diamonds must by determined by an independent expert.
  • Karl Hammer in no way wants to become involved in (international) criminal or morally reprehensible acts of conduct. Acquiring the gold and the diamonds must be in accordance with the aforementioned.
  • The explanation of the entire code as used in the specific letter in the dossier must be rational and intelligible, so that this explanation substantiates what the factual hiding place of the gold and the diamonds has been and where therefore the gold and the diamonds were now found.
  • Karl Hammer lays no claim on any gold or diamonds retrieved.
  • The discoverer(s) of the gold and diamonds, however, agree to reveal their full and detailed account of how they deciphered the code and obtained the gold and diamonds to Karl Hammer, and that on the bases of this account Karl Hammer has the exclusive publication rights.
